A few questions about Clomid

Postby linda1960 on Mon May 26, 2008 1:54 am

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for some time now. I have recently been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian disease. My doctor really took the time to explain the disease to me and I understand it. The only thing that I am unclear about is the medication, Clomid, that my ob/gyn wants tostart me on after my next test is complete. I would like to have more information on Clomid. What are the side effects if I take it? Is there an increased likelihood of us having a multiple birth? Also, how long will it take me to conceive once I start to taking the Clomid medication?

The most common known side effects of Clomid is; dizziness, insomnia, lightheadedness, hot flashes, ovarian enlargement, depression, heachache, alopecia and ,most importantly for you, infertility. It should only be taken when the patient is NOT ovulating. Otherwise, it can cause infertility which will not be worth the benefits of increasing ovulation. Only about 10% of women who do conceive while taking Clomid have multiples. Normally, only 1% of women have a chance of multiples. Clomid will not reduce or lessen your chances of conceiving. You may conceive right away after taking Clomid.

I recommend you begin charting your cycles. I also urge you to read "Taking Charge of your Fertility" by Toni Weschler for more information before beginning a strong medication like Clomid. I wish you the best!
