Mobic & Celebrex - What is the difference?

Postby karenmcallister on Mon May 26, 2008 1:51 am

I have arthritis and currently take 200mg of Celebrex daily. A friend of mine who is also an RN takes 15mg of Mobic daily for her arthritis. I have since learned that it is the only arthritis medicine her hospital will prescribe. Apparently, it is supposed to be more effective that Celebrex and is also considered a safer medicine. Is this true? Is it safer? What are the possible side effects of switching to Mobic from Celebrex?

Thanks!

Mobic is generally easier on the stomach and the GI tract. It does not have any serious side effects such as, increased cardiovascular morbidity and death, that its counterparts, vioxx and bextra had. Mobic is considered a less specific COX-2 inhibitor. There are no studies proving Mobic to better than Celebrex. Neither one is available in a generic and more cost efficient form. You may consider a cheaper alternative called Etodolac which is generic and found to be much more tolerated than either ibuprofen or naprosyn.

My mother took Celebrex and tolerated it well. However, she did experience severe stomach problems with Mobic. I recommend trying them both and see which you works the best for the individual. Lastly, while advice from friends is always welcome, it should not be substituted over your doctors advice. Good luck!
