My doctor has changed my meds from Lipitor to Simvastatin

Postby janet_g on Mon May 26, 2008 5:26 am

My doctor has switched me to 40 mgs of Simvastatin from 10 mgs of Lipitor. He explained that it is because Simvastatin is now available at a cheaper cost. I have been on Lipitor 10mg for 4 years and it has worked well at lowering my cholesterol. So why am I being switched now? My husband currently takes 20mg of Simvastatin and this works well for him. I would also like to know why I am going from 10mg of Lipitor to 40mgs of Simvastatin? Is 40 mgs of Simvastatin equal to 10mgs of Lipitor?

Yes, 40 mgs of Simvastatin would have the equivalent effect of 10mgs of Lipitor. Your doctor is right about the costs too. Simvastatin is cheaper than Lipitor. These are the main reasons why many doctors agree that prescribing Simvastatin over Lipitor is a better choice. Studies have also proven that the common doses of Lipitor and Simvastatin are equally effective at treating and reducing LDL cholesterol (better known as the "bad" cholesterol). The savings are also huge with Lipitor costing $2.50 to $3.00 per day, while Simvastatin sells for much less at 75 cents to $1.00 per day at most pharmacies, and as low as 10 cents per day at discount pharmacies, such as Costco. Doctors with patients on Lipitor are currently converting thousands of patients to Simvastatin.
