What generic alternatives to Advair do you use?

Postby kimwoods on Mon May 26, 2008 1:39 am

Hi All,

Advair has worked quite well for me for years. However, it is no longer as effective as it once was and it tends to cause thrush in my throat. I am looking at switching to something similar and hopefully cheaper than Advair has been. Perhaps Asmanx? Does it work as well and is it cheaper? What other generic/cost effective drugs are available for asthma prevention? Specifically, for mild attacks with periodic wheezing. These attacks usually occur during the night or in the early morning. I am also interested in any possible herbal remedies. I also have trouble catching my breath at times but my Doctor is not sure whether this is asthma related or due to anxiety. Thanks for any help you can offer!

I do not recommend Asmanex in your situation as it is only a steroid which acts as a preventative medication. It will also cause thrush which is caused by not properly rinsing your mouth after use. Your doctor and pharmacist should have explained this to you. Also, since this is a newer medication it is not likely to be cheaper. Advair is steroid as well but also a bronchodilator, which is much more effective. It must, of course, be used properly and consistently. It should only be used twice a day, though you may need to increase this dosage as required. Lastly, quite often anxiety can post as a mild asthma attack. To help differentiate between the two try what is called pursed-lip breathing. With your lips partially closed, exhale to slow down the airflow out of your lungs. If you feel better after doing this for several breaths it is anxiety. If this does not help then you should use your rescue inhaler. I recommend using either xopenex, albuterol combivent or similar inhalers. Please note that if your are using your rescue inhalers more than two times in a two week period, your medication may need to be adjusted.

I have tried Singulair but found it to be uneffective. I would like to have some alternative medications that I could discuss with my doctor. I like to be prepared as the clinics do not always take the time required to discuss and explain options. I would also really appreciate any advice or alternatives to Advair. Thanks!
